Egypt - then and even now
In Victorian times the English gentry would embark on Grand Tours of European cities such as Paris, Rome and Florence to absorb and admire the architecture and artworks of the great masters. They were not averse to enjoying themselves with wine, women and song. For the more adventurous there was the lure of Ancient Egypt. From the steamy chaotic Cairo markets, the camel ride at the base of the Pyramids, to sailing on Nile in a felucca and visiting the temples at Luxor. Times change but the Pyramids are still there as are the Temples of Luxor and those wonderful feluccas on the Nile. This small collection of images were taken in late 1986 but could have been taken today.
The Nile
The feluccas that sail on the Nile and indeed in areas of the Red Sea and Eastern Mediterranean are a traditional wooden boat with one or two lateen sails. Very popular with tourists, a quiet and gentle way to view life on the river Nile.
The Markets
It?s December and cold, the scarf keeps the head warm. Otherwise it's business as usual, whatever you might be looking for is here.
Temples.
While the Pyramids of Giza are spectacular is it perhaps the vast temple complexes that are even more interesting. Luxor, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, the vast rock temples moved to higher ground to avoid being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Hieroglyphs.
Rather like ancient graffiti or even ancients newspapers, carved into temple walls and columns, everywhere amongst the temple complexes. However it has taken scholars hundreds of years to be able to decipher the hidden meanings of the ubiquitous inscriptions.
